This article in NPR highlights the perils of pushing young people too hard and how parents/carers can learn to back off:

A very common theme in the work we do with young people feeling pressure from all around them – peers, teachers, parents/carers..and themselves.

Support is required for both the young people and adults to balance well-being and achievement with well-being priority.

Young people need to be supported in understanding the inside out nature of our thinking and well-being and to feel comfortable making decisions that they know inside are right for them rather than feeling pressurised to live by everyone else’s agenda.

Adults need to be supported in understanding the potential impact of highly pressurising young people. And subsequently do the opposite, help free young people from pressure. You’ll be amazed how performance can naturally improve as a result!
